The one-of-a-kind Seaventures Dive Rig Resort is based in a jackup accommodation module previously used in the oil and gas industry.
The entire platform was towed and deployed for use in oil rigs in various locations before being decommissioned in 1985.
When coming across the unit, the founders saw the potential of turning this imposing metal edifice into a flotel or floating hotel.
At the time, this not only presented an exciting opportunity for something different, it embraced and encouraged ecotourism in Mabul Island.
The founders’ vision was that the hotel could easily be set up with minimal adverse effects to the area’s land and marine ecosystems as there was essentially no need for chopping trees down or extensive piling into the sea.
The rig has been in Mabul since 1997, providing divers with a unique starting point for exploring nearby Sipadan, one of the world’s top dive sites.
Today, the majestic structure still maintains the spirit and allure of a working rig, with the main difference being that the rooms (dormitory, twin and deluxe) are now more comfortable.
The high vantage point from the rig’s sundeck provides visitors with stunning views of the sun traversing across the horizon as well as a sweeping view of Mabul Island.
Barbeques organized at the rig’s open air dining area and having a drink at the well-stocked bar while embracing the 360º views of the Celebes Sea are other highlights.
The resort regularly organizes boats that go across the 500m distance to Mabul Island for those who wish to take in the local scenery.
Snorkelling & diving
Being a 5 Star Padi Dive Center in the middle of the ocean, the Seaventures Dive Rig Resort is ideal for visitors wanting to maximize their diving opportunities and get straight into the action.
The house reef, which is conveniently located just beneath the rig, remains one of the most interesting dive sites in Mabul. It is a haven and magnet for numerous types of fish and other marine life.
This is especially so for those who only have a few days in Mabul. Furthermore, as one of the few resorts in Mabul that offer unlimited house reef diving, Seaventures Dive Rig is likely to fully satisfy any cravings you have for going diving.
The Seaventures Dive Rig Resort is one of 12 dive operators granted Sipadan permits from the state.
Facilities & activities
Entertainment-wise, there are plenty of activities on board such as a games room equipped with snooker, mahjong and table tennis facilities. There is also a conference room which seats up to 60 people for group meetings and screening videos or even movies.
