Pulau Kulapuan

Kulapuan (also known as Kalapuan), nestled in the Celebes Sea off Sabah, Malaysia, offers a serene escape rich in natural beauty and adventure. Flanked by Mataking to the east, Pandanan to the north, Pom Pom to the west, and Timba Timba to the south, this hidden gem features beautiful sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery.

According to a 2022 survey by Reef Check Malaysia, Pulau Kulapuan hosts over 220 families, including more than 100 sea gypsies. The island’s Bajau village offers a unique cultural experience, with friendly locals sharing insights into the island’s history and lifestyle. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local way of life and enjoy the island’s tranquility.

Part of the Semporna Archipelago, Pulau Kulapuan is renowned for its rich biodiversity and vibrant marine life, making it a paradise for divers and snorkelers. The surrounding coral reefs are teeming with colorful fish, rays, and turtles, providing excellent opportunities for underwater exploration.

Less developed and quieter than its neighboring islands, Kulapuan Island offers a peaceful retreat. Visitors can reach the island by boat from Semporna, with several dive operators providing transport services and day trips that include Kulapuan in their itinerary. The boat ride typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour, offering scenic views of the surrounding islands.
